20+ Years Practice
Guru Thirumathi M. Thamarai is the visionary founder and artistic director of Chennaiyil Thiruvaiyaru Kalalaya, Chennai's renowned classical Bharatanatyam institution. Her journey into the art form began in childhood — a calling she answered with absolute dedication, transforming years of devotional practice into a lifetime of mastery.
Holding both an MBA and a postgraduate degree in Bharatanatyam, Guru Thamarai represents a rare synthesis of academic discipline and artistic depth. Her intellectual grounding informs not only her artistry but the very ethos of the institution she founded — one that treats classical dance as a living philosophy, not merely a performing art.
Her most formative training came under the guidance of the esteemed Dr. Hemaja Athulkumar, a guru of extraordinary stature in the Bharatanatyam tradition. Under her guru's watchful eye, Thamarai absorbed not just the technical vocabulary of the Kalakshetra bani — the adavus, mudras, and abhinaya — but the inner life of the art form: the devotion, the silence, and the surrender that transforms movement into prayer.
With over two decades of dedicated practice and performance, Guru Thamarai has evolved into far more than a practitioner. She is a mentor, a guide, and a cultural ambassador — one who inspires her students to approach the art with grace, dignity, and authenticity. Her pedagogy is deeply rooted in the classical guru-shishya parampara: patient, personal, and profoundly respectful of the tradition she carries forward.

Her Philosophy
For Guru Thamarai, Bharatanatyam is not a skill to be acquired — it is a truth to be lived. Her teaching philosophy begins with the body but reaches toward the soul, drawing students into a relationship with the art form that is devotional in nature and disciplined in practice.
“The body is the first temple. Before one learns to perform, one must learn to be still enough to listen.”
— Guru Thirumathi M. Thamarai
Every class at Chennaiyil Thiruvaiyaru Kalalaya is structured around three pillars: Nritta (pure rhythmic form), Nritya (expressive dance), and Natya (dramatic storytelling). These are not taught as separate compartments but as an inseparable trinity — the complete language through which the divine speaks through the dancer.
Guru Thamarai is known for her extraordinary patience and her ability to meet each student where they are. She believes that every learner carries an innate capacity for grace — it is the guru's sacred task to reveal it. Her classes are not performances for an audience; they are intimate conversations between the student, the art, and the tradition.
Guru-Shishya Parampara
The ancient teacher-student lineage, preserved and practised with living devotion.
Bhava Before Technique
Emotional authenticity and inner feeling are cultivated alongside physical mastery.
Every Student, a Custodian
Students are trained not just as performers but as guardians of a living cultural heritage.
"Every mudra tells a story the tongue cannot speak."
Sacred Lineage
In the classical tradition, the lineage of knowledge is as sacred as the knowledge itself. Each teacher carries the flame lit by those who came before, and passes it — transformed and enriched — to the next generation.

The parampara does not merely transfer technique — it transmits a way of seeing, a way of being, and a way of offering the self to something greater than the self.
